Bike Safety – Rules for your safe riding!

For some it is a great form of exercising, to others it can be a fantastic way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. There might be different reasons for cycling. It arrived back in early 1800s and since then it has been appealing people of all ages, from the small children to the active senior citizens.
 
But what has changed with the time is the road safety. Earlier there were a handful of cars and other vehicles on the road. However, with time things have changed and the population of vehicles has increased to manifolds. It benefits with a better lifestyle, but when it is about biking, roads are no longer safe. The increase in number of traffic jams and accidents all around the world proves the same. And the worst affected out of all are the bike riders. Just like every great has some risk for accident or injury, cycling is not an exception.

  • Helmet: Make it a rule, whenever you unlock your bicycle for your next ride wear your helmet for sure. It is probably one the most important rule and tip for bike safety. The logic is simple; it protects your head from injuries. Remember, your brain is the most vital organ which controls all motor and sensory functions of your body such as cognition, coordination and much more. In case, some incident occurs, a helmet protects your head and neck from severe trauma. Hence, no helmet- no cycling!

 

  • Follow traffic rules: Breaking rules on road can prove to be fatal. Thus, do not act like a stubborn bicycle rider and make sure you understand all the riding rules beforehand. Ensure you ride only in the designated areas and strictly obey the traffic rules. Special lanes are formed for cycling to offer you greater security. Hence, while commuting, don’t take your bicycle in restricted areas.

 

  • Communication: Here is doesn’t mean that you need to communicate with others through your phone, or other devices. It is about communicating your intentions to others driving on the road. Hence, use hand signals whenever you need to stop or turn. Do not stop or make sharp turns suddenly. A hand signal can be used to warn the vehicle or bike behind.

 

  • Enhanced visibility: Are you starting late night or in early morning, when it is dark outside. If yes, then have you made special arrangements to increase your visibility? Yes, it is an important aspect of ensuring your safety when driving in the off hours. Add a bicycle taillight or those special lights which make other motorists able to see you from far distance. Wearing vibrant clothing is another thing you can do.
