Securing Door Methods

It’s a home security essential to make sure your door is strongly secured, as it directly affects the level of risk to your property, belongings,  and anybody in the house. Doors play a huge security role – and in this blog post, the experts at Golden Locksmith will detail the best ways to ensure your door is durably secure.

Length of Screws

Make sure that the screws on your strike plates and door hinges are replaced with three inch screws, rather than the typical .75 inch ones that are normally placed in doors. THis way, you grip the door directly into the studs of the door frame. The strike is the absolute most important part of the door to secure, and by adding long screws, the door will be immensely strengthened.

The Door Itself

Make sure that you have a solid and strong door as opposed to a hollow or light one. Make sure to try and get a door with an iron or steel core in order to prevent risks of bashing attacks. This way you don’t have to worry about any forced entry.

Door Covers

Even when your door is protected, certain areas of it will be more vulnerable than others. Make sure that the door’s hardware is protected by boring holes directly in the hole to fit the door’s handle and deadbolt, with a cross bored hole that is all protected by a slipcover fasted under or around the door’s lock hardware. This protects the pathways between the holes – just make sure to get an iron or steel cover rather than a brass one.

High Security Deadbolts

There’s no replacement to a high security durable and patented deadbolt. Make sure to get a Grade 1 deadbolt if you want absolute protection, and choose from the massive selection of both smart and regular locks in order to fit both your security needs and those of practicality/convenience.

Strike Plates

Make sure to get a lengthened strike plate, and in turn, increasing the amount of screws that secure the plate to the door frame, thus spreading out the forced impact of a strike across the door, so it won’t affect just a single location in the door. Stronger steel will allow you to prevent the strike plate from bending or breaking over time.

Security Screens

These screens of perforated metal create a second boundary between your door that allows you to see everything on the other side of the door, without the blocked vision of a peephole, without exposing your home to entry. It also gives you the chance to add another complete set of locks. This is a good option for those who are afraid of forced entry while you are opening the door, and also those who are concerned about home break ins after long periods of absence from home.

Strengthened Glass

It’s a common burglary method to break glass near the door. Make sure to reinforce windows with metal bars that are close enough to prevent arm access, so a criminal can’t break the glass and open up the door. The best way to strengthen glass is to reinforce it with security film applied directly to the window that prevents it from shattering and secures the door from both sides of the home.
