Desk Locks

Desk locks are much less acknowledged than residential or commercial door locks – but they are still important. Some desks house incredibly important documents that require just as much protection as the interior of a business or home – and it’s important to ensure that they have the protection of a specialized lock. Here’s Golden Locksmith’s guide to why you need to pay attention to your desk lock.

It hasn’t been modified since you acquired the desk

You may have never changed your lock since you got the desk in the first place. Like filing cabinet locks, many desk locks come default from the manufacturer, who has not placed extreme efforts or discernment in terms of maintaining strong security for these locks. It’s just not their main concern. These mass produced desk locks are very vulnerable, usually being cam locks or tiny weak pun tumblers. Just as you wouldn’t want a lock that’s super easy to break through for the front door of your home or business, you wouldn’t want a super flimsy lock for a desk that houses vulnerable documents. The best way to figure out if your desk lock is adequately protecting its contents is by having it examined by a licensed locksmith expert, like those at Golden.

Lost Desk Lock Keys

If you have had your desk lock keys lost or stolen, you will need to enforce key control in order to maintain your security. While it may not seem as drastic as a situation as lost or stolen front door keys, if your desk houses valuables or sensitive information, it’s just as essential to replace your desk lock when you find yourself in this situation. You might want to simply rekey your desk, as this is sometimes an adequate approach for other kinds of lost keys, but we stress the importance of actually replacing the desk lock in this situation, as it more actively protects the contents of your desk – and it allows you peace of mind in knowing that your assets are secure.

Your Desk Lock is Broken

If your desk lock is suddenly rendered useless, you will need to replace it. You have have accidentally broken a key off in the lock – or even been the victim of an attempted burglary or break in. If your locks are damaged you will need to have them replaced, and the same is true for locks that are experiencing simple malfunctions. This is important due to the fact that it’s not uncommon for burglars to attempt to break into the same location multiple times – and once your desk has already been weakened, it’s doubly vulnerable to any break in attempts.
